Psalm 1, Matthew 7:13-27

What a clear picture of the two paths in life.  The broad path leads to death.  People choosing this path try to build their life on shifting sand.  They have no solid foundation.  They are blown about by ever changing winds of popular opinion and cultural propaganda.  All these metaphors clearly mirror the reality of life without God, and the end results are equally obvious.  Why would anyone choose this path?

Far better is the path that leads to life.  On the narrow path we can build our life on the solid Rock.  No storm can bring us down.  Rather than an uncertain present and future, we are like a fruitful tree, watered by a flowing river.  Our roots grow ever deeper and firmer, nourished by the river of life that flows from the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.

And so we call to those floundering through life with no hope, offering this gift of God.  This is our job here on earth.  It would seem like  an easy job, but it is not.  The way to destruction is broad and easy.  People do not have to do anything to go down this path.  The winds of pride and lust and apathy sweep them along with lies.  They willingly choose to believe the lies, because the lies make them feel good, however temporarily.

Many not only reject the narrow path, they angrily lash out at the bearers of the Good News.  They would rather believe a lie that feeds their pride and lust than to hear the truth.  The truth exposes the lie they choose to believe, and they don't like it.  Foolishly, they pretend the lie is true, as if believing it vehemently enough will make it true. They scorn and shout and curse believers, more to convince themselves than us.

Our job is to warn them.  We are not in charge of the results.  We must always remember this.  We are on solid ground.  We are safe from whatever might try to attack us.  We are not walking with unbelievers on the path to death.  We are on the path to life.  We are lush trees, offering shady relief and good fruit.  Unbelievers may scoff at what we offer, but that does not change who we are.

In God is my salvation and my glory;  The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

Psalm 62:7  (NKJV)
