Week 3/30-4/5/24                  Suggested Scripture to Ponder this week:

I John 2:15-17

Do not love the world or the things in the world.

If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world.  And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

I John 2:15-17 (NKJV)

Commentary:

It is natural to be focused on the things of the world.  Those things I see, hear, touch, taste and smell distract and demand my attention. There are constant enticements and fears.  But the things of this world are not really real.  All will pass away.

Spiritual things are real.  These last forever."...Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).   My family, my job, my home, my friends, my church, all place obligations on me.  The latest news stories make me angry, afraid and frustrated.  It's easy to have more faith in what I see with my physical eyes than with my spiritual eyes, but that is wrong.

Christ followers must train themselves to see the physical world with spiritual eyes. This world is temporary.  God's will is forever. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away." (Matthew 24:35).

In order to do the will of God, I have to know what the will of God is.  I can't just guess and use my own earthly judgment.  I can't tell myself that something is the will of God because it seems right or good to me. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6).

To know the will of God, I have to study His instructions (His Word) and spend time in conversation with Him (praying and meditating).

Dear Lord, put in us a sincere hunger and thirst for You and a compassion for the lost.  Help us to stand firmly on Your word in everything we do and say, both small and great.  Fill us with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding (Colossians 1:9).

In God is my salvation and my glory;  The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

Psalm 62:7  (NKJV)
